SPEECHLESS
Kaleena Cote

I've been meaning to say something but
There's so much in my thoughts
And the second I begin to type
The right words turn to knots

I could form all these comparisons
Of all that makes me grin
I could craft a list of favorite things
That light me from within

But still the right words just don't come out
At least to describe this—
A strange feeling I get from your gaze
Or from a whispered kiss

I could say that I get butterflies
But that sounds so…cliché
I could say that I get needle pricks
(The kind you want to stay)

I could say that I get real nervous
Like speaking to a crowd
I could say that I get paranoid
My heart's beating too loud

But still the right words just don't come out
I wish they would with ease—
A strange feeling I get when we laugh
Or from a quick hand squeeze

I guess this feeling doesn't really
Need to be so defined
And either way these pulse-racing thoughts
All make sense in my mind
