Short Story
D.P. Beyfuss

Once upon a time there used to be a guy who had a job.  Everyday he woke up at a
quarter to seven.  He drank coffee, showered, got dressed and walked to the bus stop.
He took the 116 bus to the train station and caught the 8:03 train to Hoboken.  Most
days he'd stop at Quick Check for coffee before getting on the train.  At work he bought
a bottle of water or a third cup of coffee and read the comics on the Yahoo Comics
Page section of the Yahoo news.  He emailed his girlfriend who lived very far away and
sometimes stared at pictures of her he kept in a folder on his desktop.  At ten o'clock
he started working and continued till around 12:30 and then he'd break for lunch.
Lunch was a beef or chicken gyro, a couple of chilidogs, a veggie burger or a falafel.
More coffee at two, many more emails and as much work as he could stand doing.  At
four o'clock he listened to the news.  At five o'clock he left work in search of cold beer.
Sometimes he'd stay in town and drink bud light for a dollar a pint.  Sometimes he'd
hurry back home and drink micro-brew for two dollars a pint.  Sometimes he'd smoke a
bowl or take a pill, and sometimes he'd go to bed early and read for a while.
Sometimes he slept and sometimes he didn't sleep.  He'd call his girlfriend who lived
very far away and tell her “good night”, and then set his alarm clock to six a.m.  He did
this everyday with very little to show for it until one day he forgot where he was and
what he was doing.  He forgot who he was and where he was going.  He couldn't
remember what was tomorrow and what was today because everything had somehow
melded together.  Dates, times, places, hours and minutes; months and days had
disappeared at some point in time which no longer existed.  Things got very quiet and it
was very hot outside.  Lightning flashed and lit up what wasn't there anymore and
thunder broke the silence.
